Just Like Me...

I have been using a very simple technique the last few days to test the waters.  What I have found during this little experiment is actually pretty amazing.

The results of this very easy technique has been very effective in;

  • stopping negative thoughts spiraling out of control;
  • stopping negative energy and vibrations from gaining momentum and attracting more of the things I don't like;
  • gaining more insight into my own human experience and that of people around me;
  • helping to prevent a simple incident from negatively affecting my thinking, mood and behavior for the day;
  • giving me a broader perspective and a moment to reflect on the people, events, things that I might be energetically attracting into my life.

This technique, used and taught by Pema Chƶdrƶn (Tibetan Buddhist Nun) is so easy, quick and simply called 'Just like Me...'.  You see we are all connected and we can find something in common with most people.  In this way we are able to calm our own emotions and responses to events, situations and people but also diffuse situations that could easily get out of control.

Like every group situation weather a family gathering, office meeting or training course, there are likely to be people you gravitate to more easily and others that may just rub you up the wrong way.  Below I provide some examples of using 'Just Like Me...' with some often found personalities and situations that may be stressful.


The Teachers Pet

You may find in a group situation a person that wants to be noticed by the teacher.  This person may eagerly answer questions but will also add information that is not covered in a lecture just to showcase the knowledge they already have on the subject.  

If this person usually get on your nerves, this technique may help you out.



Technique

Just Like Me...he/she wants to learn more about the content being taught;

Just Like Me...he/she wants to be noticed as a good student;

Just Like Me...he/she wants to be heard;

Just Like Me...he/she wants to be seen for what she has already learnt;

Just Like Me...he/she wants to learn these skills to help herself and others.

Outcome

Notice what happens during this technique.  You can even rate your SUDS (intensity measurement) prior to starting and see how it changes as you use this technique.  

You may start noticing more and more things about this person that is just like you.  Your thoughts may change gradually, followed by your emotions and then your energetic vibration will change to something that feels more positive. 

The Monologue-er

Some people talk more than others.  Within this group of talkers there are some that talk in a monologue for a long period of time.  This person only needs the occasional nod here and there but no real input from the listener.  When this happens you may find yourself tuning out of the conversation.


Technique

Just Like Me...he/she wants to be heard;

Just Like Me...he/she wants to express herself in a way that is true to her;

Just Like Me...he/she wants to verbalize her experience and make sense of it;

Just Like Me...he/she has knowledge and experience that she wants to impart.


Outcome

You may start refocusing on the person and what they are trying to express.  You may feel a new connection with the person that you weren't able to experience before.  A moving towards what makes me feel uncomfortable instead of pushing away.  You may notice different things about the person like their expressions, body language and tone of voice.  You may start looking at the person with more interest as you share a commonality.  As your thoughts change, your feelings and behavior will follow too.  With this change your energetic vibration changes to be more neutral or even positive.  

The Know-it-all

This person may have great wisdom to impart and the delivery of said wisdom is done in a way that makes one feel less empowered.  This style is one that is less likely to take into account your own ideas and thoughts on a subject as the Know-it-all has the only right answer.  This person is very quick to disregard your ideas and answers to questions in favor of his/her own interpretation.

Technique

Just Like Me...he/she has a lot of experience and wisdom to impart;


Just Like Me...he/she wants to feel that the information given to the student is understood clearly;

Just Like Me...he/she is eager to teach what he knows;

Just Like Me...he/she wants to help others live the life that they want;

Just Like Me...he/she wants to feel understood.


Outcome

You may sense a connection with this person.  You may find your mind moving away from negative thinking and more towards listening to the content that he/she is trying to deliver.  Notice your emotions becoming less charged with his/her delivery of the content leading to a more positive energetic vibration.  

See how easily this technique can be used in many situations?  

The Traffic Jam 

Try this technique next time you sit in traffic and getting annoyed.  You might say:

Just Like Me...all of these people are trying to get somewhere;

Just like Me...this person next to me are getting annoyed as he/she is late for work;

Just Like Me...this lady next to me needs to be somewhere;

Just Like Me...all these people want to rush here there and everywhere to get things done;

Just Like Me...I bet no one has noticed that beautiful rose bush across the road;

Just Like Me...I can see the person in front of me just wanting to get home;

Just Like Me...some of these people are parents who just want to get home and spend some time with their kids;

Just Like Me...all these people are probably hungry and trying to get a bit of lunch before having to go back to work.
