Tips to Improve your EFT Tapping Experience

As an EFT Practitioner and Teacher, it is fundamental to help guide my students gradually through the process of learning and applying their new EFT Tapping skills.  Some students prefer to jump straight into high SUDS (Subjective Units of Distress Scale) level issues (high levels are 7-10 SUDS levels).  Some of these students get great results and others struggle to move down the measurement scale and get unmotivated, lose confidence in themselves and/or the technique.

In my courses, I always recommend starting off in assignments with low to midlevel intensity subjects.  Here's why...


BY STARTING OFF WITH LOW SUDS LEVEL ISSUES YOU:

1.  start seeing quick results and therefore build confidence in the technique and your ability to use the technique effectively;

2.  get connected with your body and how it feels when you tap so you can start to become really sensitive to identifying when there are shifts within your energy system;

3.  you have the opportunity to build up in severity SUDS level and have a better understanding of how high you can move up the SUDS level before you need further assistance by an EFT Practitioner.  Some people may be happily able to move up to level 10 issues without needing professional assistance, however, others might become overwhelmed with content that may be unlocked during tapping especially where a person has experienced a traumatic event.

4.  as you have built better understanding through practice and confidence in the technique and in yourself applying the technique you know the effectiveness of using EFT and thus less likely to lose faith halfway through and stop tapping mid-way down the SUDS.


TIPS FOR WORKING ON HIGH SUDS LEVEL ISSUES:

You have started off with low SUDS level issues and have gained confidence in EFT Tapping, it's effects and your ability to apply the techniques effectively.  You also know your boundaries and when you need to seek assistance from an experienced EFT Practitioner and you decide to start working on high SUDS level issues.  Here are some tips to help you through this process...


1.  High SUDS aspects or problems tend to take longer to work through.  

Many times people tend to give up tapping after 15 minutes which may be fine for low SUDS problems but for high SUDS issues you may need to continue tapping on different aspects of the issue for much longer.  (A session in my practice can at times last 90 minutes or more).

2.  Tap on different aspects of the issue.  

For example:  So you tapped on your fear of spiders so different ASPECTS will relate to different angles of attack to reduce stress levels in the emotional brain and when you have a long-standing and high level fear it will take a lot more work.  So ask yourself questions like:

  • In what situations do I fear spiders?  Do I fear spiders that are in a different continent?  Now move closer...Do I fear spiders that are in a different town?... Now move closer...Do I fear spiders in a Zoo that remain in display cases/cages?  Do I fear spiders that may or may not be around me?
  • Do I fear all spiders no matter what size, name, look, etc?  If you fear all spiders then work out what is it that spiders all have that specifically is affecting you.  If only some spiders cause this reaction within you then research what those spiders have in common that the others don't and that on these issues.
  • Now you might want to look at what caused this fear?  When was the first time you remember fearing a spider?  Is there a specific event that caused this fear or a lifetime of conditioning?  For example, being specific to myself, I live in a country where some spiders can kill and so we have a lifetime of conditioning of leaving spiders alone...that and my mother fears spiders also so a bit of social conditioning.  What is it for you?  You may unravel a belief that spiders are unsafe. 

All these aspects would need to be tapped on...focussing specifically on each aspect as well as each set of conditions within an aspect for example if you are focussing on what spiders look like you might want to speak about their eyes and their hairy legs and so on. 

3.  Eye movements.  

Ensure you are moving your eyes around especially when talking or recalling very emotive conditions around spiders in this case.  This helps to further desensitize and calm the amygdala while tapping.

4.  9 Gamut Procedure.  

This procedure is a great way to start off a tapping process when your SUDS level is high.  You can also use this procedure in the middle of your tapping exercise when you are struggling to move down the SUDS or get stuck on a SUDS level.  

I teach the 9 Gamut Procedure in my ProTap course as it is more specific to Therapists learning to use tapping on clients.  However, for a quick lesson follow below:

The 9 Gamut Procedure.

To locate the Gamut Point, which is on the back of either hand, put a finger between the ring and little finger at the base. From this location, move your finger about a half-inch toward your wrist and this is where you’ll tap the Gamut Point.

Perform these 9 steps while tapping the Gamut point continuously, facing forward and keeping the head still:

1. Eyes closed.

2. Eyes open.

3. Eyes down hard right while holding the head steady.

4. Eyes down hard left while holding the head steady.

5. Roll the eyes in a circle as though your nose is at the centre of a clock and you are trying to see all of the numbers in order.

6. Roll the eyes in a circle in the opposite direction as before.

7. Hum 2 seconds of a song (Any song that is easy like Happy Birthday* is an easy one if it isn't traumatic for you or Twinkle Twinkle Little Star).

8. Count rapidly from 1 to 5.

9. Hum 2 seconds of a song again.

Use these steps in the exact order they have been given.

* For some people, humming Happy Birthday causes resistance because it brings up memories of unhappy birthdays. In this case, you can either use EFT on those unhappy memories and resolve them … or … you can sidestep this issue for now by humming some other song.


5.  Keep Tapping.  

You may find you need to tap on the same issue in different ways and using different aspects of the issue many times before getting real results lasting results.  This process is akin to taking bites of an apple at different angles to eventually get to the core.  So be patient with yourself as you had a lifetime to accumulate limiting beliefs, negative life experiences and perspectives or behaviours and these issues tend to take a little more time to rewire.
